PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To always perform high quality reading by detecting a foreign matter such as dust attached to an optical component such as a mirror and performing appropriate processing about the foreign matter on the basis of the detection even in the case of the configuration that optical systems of illuminating light and reading light are the same. SOLUTION: When the power of an image reader is turned on, or when a time preset by an internal timer comes (YES of S1), an imaging element is moved to a detectable position, and a flare light detection operation by the imaging element is started (S2). When the imaging element detects flare light caused by the foreign matter G present in a mirror or the like (YES of S3), a driving part operates a warning buzzer (S4) to notify that the foreign matter exists.
