A method and system for transporting inventory items. The method includes calculating a cost associated with a mobile drive unit moving through a cell of a workspace; calculating a cost associated with transporting the mobile drive unit between two points using a particular conveyance equipment; two path costs are calculated associated with two paths between an initial and destination locations; selecting either the first or second path and then finally transmitting information identifying the selected path to the mobile drive unit.
