PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel compound, particularly a two-photon-absorbing compound. SOLUTION: The compound having an azulene ring on its end is represented by general formula (1). R is hydrogen or a methylene group and the methylene groups are bonded together to form a ring; X and Y are each a hydrogen atom or a group selected from among an alkyl group, an alkoxy group and an amino group; and n is an integer of 0-2.
