PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide facsimile communication apparatus and method for making speech communication and manual transmission possible in FoIP, especially in IP-FAX communication. SOLUTION: When speech communication is performed through an IP network, voice uttered from a user is inputted into a phone, a sound signal inputted into a phone is converted by a sound Codec into an IP packet, the IP packet is transmitted to the IP network, the IP packet received from the IP network is converted by the sound Codec into a sound signal and the sound signal is outputted from the phone. When IP-FAX communication is performed, image data read out by means of a scanner is transmitted to the IP network under control of a CPU, and the image data received from the IP network is printed by means of a printer under control of the CPU. When manual transmission of IP-FAX communication is performed, speech communication is performed with a destination through the IP network and when a start button is depressed, the scanner reads a document and transmits the image data to the destination by IP-FAX communication.
