Downhole valve actuated by a linear induction motor

A tool 200 that is usable with a well includes a tool operator 220 and a linear induction motor 206, which actuates the tool operator. The tool is preferably a safety valve or isolation valve. The tool operator may comprise an electromagnetic reaction member of the linear induction motor. The tool operator may take the form of a flow tube. The tool may also include a hold open mechanism 230 activated once the tool is in an open position to maintain that position using a reduced amount of electrical power. The hold open mechanism may comprise a solenoid-operated device or a mechanical latch. The valve may be a flapper or ball type.
