PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reliable optical encoder that reduces mechanical changes in sealing resin, such as cracks and breaks, when a light source and a light source slit are resin-sealed. SOLUTION: The optical encoder 11 has the light source 32, the light source slit 4 for transmitting predetermined portions of light emitted from the light source 32, a scale 2 having a periodic pattern 22 for reflecting or transmitting the light transmitted through the light source slit 4, and a photodetector 5 for receiving the light past the scale 2. The light source 32, photodetector 5 and light source slit 4 are sealed in sealing resin, and a transparent resin member 44 forming the base of the light source slit is an elastic member.
