PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tin oxide particle having surface resistivity comparable to ATO (antimony-doped tin oxide) and high transparency but not containing antimony causing a toxic concern. SOLUTION: The conductive tin oxide particle is an ultrafine particle of tin oxide crystal which is made of an oxygen deficient type tin oxide represented by the general formula: SnO<SB>(2-x)</SB>(wherein x is 0<x<1) and has an atomic ratio of oxygen to tin O/Sn detected by XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) of 1.75-1.95 and a crystal diameter of 3-15 nm. The ultrafine particle of tin oxide crytal contains 0.01-0.8 mass% of P vs. SnO<SB>(2-x)</SB>in terms of SnO<SB>2</SB>and has a compositional ratio of P at the outermost surface of the particle measured by XPS to P in the whole particle measured by XRF (X-ray fluorimetry) of >1.
