PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently and inexpensively produce an Sc-containing compound metal oxide, compound metal nitride, compound metal oxynitride, compound metal sulfide, or compound metal oxysulfide with a small particle diameter, a uniform chemical composition, and a single phase by a liquid-phase method in which a smaller amount of organic compounds is used. SOLUTION: The method for producing the composite metal compound is a method for producing a compound metal oxide, compound metal nitride, compound metal oxynitride, compound metal sulfide, or compound metal oxysulfide containing Sc and one or more metallic elements other than Sc, and comprises the steps of: (a) dissolving two or more metal element compounds including at least an Sc compound and a hydroxycarboxylic acid in a solvent and reacting them to form a metal complex, (b) heating the solution with the formed metal complex after adding a polyhydric alcohol compound thereto to form gel, (c) heating the formed gel to obtain a composite metal compound precursor, and (d) heat-treating the composite metal compound precursor.
