Ceramic and cermet having the second phase formed from a complete solid-solution phase are provided to fabricate a tool having high toughness and strength without using WC-Co cemented carbides by forming the second phase through a phase separation of the complete solid solution phase of the ceramic and the cermet. A ceramic comprises a sintered body of solid solution powder. The solid solution powder includes complex carbide, complex carbonitride and a mixture thereof obtained from at least two metals selected from Ti based on IVa, Va and VIa groups and VIa-group metals. The sintered body has a microstructure including a complete solid solution and a second phase formed by a phase separation from the complete solid solution. |
