PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and a method for detecting step-out of a stepping motor, wherein the occurrence of step-out is detected and determined surely by open-loop control utilizing a conventionally used digital circuit, without having to use a special position sensor or change the basic characteristics of the stepping motor, and this is notified to a higher level controller. SOLUTION: A detected voltage (Vin1) is detected by a current and/or voltage detecting means via a second current sensing resistor (R2) and is digitized. If any abnormal fluctuation component that does not exist during normal driving is detected in this detected voltage (Vin1) and/or a detected motor drive detected voltage (Vin2), when a stepping motor is driven, the abnormal fluctuation component is extracted by an extracting means (G<SB>2(S)</SB>) of a step-out determination unit; the extracted fluctuation component is compared with the threshold by a step-out determining means; when the fluctuation component deviates from the threshold, that is determined as step-out; and a caution signal is outputted to a higher level controller via a caution outputting means.
