PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet discharge device capable of optimizing the speed of a document in a discharge port and enhancing discharge sheet loading property, irrespective of the feeding speed upon image reading; to provide a small image reader equipped with the sheet discharge device; to provide the control method of the image reader, and to provide a program. SOLUTION: The image reader 100 is equipped with a speed recognition means comprising an encoder plate 140 detecting the feeding speed of the document S with a feeding roller 121 and a rotation sensor 141; a driving motor controlling the feeding speed of the document S with a feeding roller 121; other driving motor controlling the discharge speed of the document S with a sheet discharge roller 160; and a lever driving motor 200 separating and pressing the sheet discharge follower roller from and against the sheet discharge roller 160. The image reader 100 determines whether the sheet discharge follower roller 161 is to be separated or pressed with the lever driving motor 200 based on the detected feeding speed of the document S.
