An apparatus and method are provided for controlling the ground windmilling of at least one of the spools (20, 24) in a gas turbine engine (10). Electrical power is supplied to a braking apparatus in one aspect. The braking apparatus is preferably a motor (32) receiving electrical power generated by a generator (30) associated with a windmilling spool (30) of the engine (10). In another aspect, an oil system (46) is powered during ground windmilling.
