PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrode for a solid polymer fuel cell capable of improving power generation performance by improving reaction activity in a gas diffusion electrode using an ion liquid as an electrolyte, and the solid polymer fuel cell using such an electrode.

SOLUTION: In the electrode for the solid polymer fuel cell provided with a gas diffusion layer and a catalyst layer, the thickness of the catalyst layer formed from a carbon to carry platinum, the ion liquid provided with proton conductivity, and an organic compound to fix this ion liquid is made to have a range of 1 to 10 μm.
