<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve high light use efficiency, high luminance uniformity, and high color uniformity in an edge-light surface light source element with color reproducibility improved by using a point-like light source such as an LED. <P>SOLUTION: The surface light source element is composed so that a generally-used fine-particle diffuser plate is replaced with at least one light control member, so as to reduce a light source image by a means that is provided to the light control member in order to control a light beam direction. The light control member has a function to obtain the high luminance uniformity and color uniformity. It is possible to reduce light absorption or light emission in an unwanted direction while preventing an increase in density of fine particles by using the light control member.
