PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydraulic auto tensioner capable of preventing the degradation of an auto tensioner function and the occurrence of noise by preventing air intrusion into a high pressure oil chamber without influencing conventional clearance design. SOLUTION: The hydraulic auto tensioner 10 comprises the high pressure oil chamber 23 pressed by a piston part 18 of a plunger inside a cylinder 17, and a low pressure oil chamber 24 communicating with the high pressure oil chamber 23 through a check valve 25, wherein oil L in the high pressure oil chamber 23 leaks to the low pressure oil chamber 24 from the end of a clearance 30 formed near the end face of the cylinder 17, via a clearance 30 between the cylinder 17 and the piston part 18 of the plunger 8, and a lipophilic coating agent 50 is applied to an upper end face 53 and a tapered face 54 of the cylinder, and to the surface 51 of a return spring and the outer peripheral surface 52 of the cylinder above the oil level of the lower pressure oil chamber 24.
