PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device management system for achieving sufficient maintenance even in a security environment equipped with a fire wall without adding any excessive facility and a method for controlling the management device. SOLUTION: This device management system is configured of a device to be managed and a management device which are connected through a network, and the management device accepts the inquiry of the presence/absence of an instruction to cross a fire wall from the device to be managed, and when there is any input instruction, the management device returns the instruction input to the inquiry in a session set in receiving the inquiry. As for such return, one instruction input in response to the inquiry is returned, and while the session is maintained according to a response to the return from the device to be managed, the input instruction is made.
