PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a brake device which generates the optimum brake force according to a degree of emergency of brake operation and shortening a distance required for stopping a vehicle. SOLUTION: The brake device has an operation amount detection means for detecting an operation amount of brake pedal; a brake force generation means for generating the brake force; and a control means for controlling the brake force generation means so as to generate the brake force according to the operation amount of brake pedal detected by the operation amount detection means. The control means has a brake operation status determination means for determining a degree of emergency of operation of the brake pedal of a driver and changes hysteresis width for retaining the brake force generated by the brake force generation means regardless of reduction in the brake pedal operation amount according to the degree of emergency determined by the brake operation status determination means when the operation amount of brake pedal is reduced.
