An aerofoil 30, eg a nozzle guide vane (22, fig. 1) of a gas turbine engine, is made from a sheet metal blank which is bent to the shape of an aerofoil such that it has a leading edge 32, a trailing edge 34, a pressure side 36 and a suction side 38, and the blank is joined at the trailing edge 34, eg by spot welds 40, seam welding or riveting. The regions of the sheet metal blank that form the leading edge 32, trailing edge 34 and pressure side 36 of the aerofoil have perforations 44 to allow cooling air to pass from the internal cavity 42. The suction side 38 of the sheet metal blank is imperforate. Tabs 48, 50 may extend from the upper and lower edges 52, 54 of the blank to engage with slots (66, 68, fig.3) in the inner and outer casings (14, 16). The blank may be laser cut or stamped. The perforations may be laser drilled. |
