A bait pellet 1 comprises a core (2, fig 1) of feed material edible by fish, surrounded by an outer layer (3, fig 1) comprising the same feed material and a significant concentration of glycerine. The core typically comprises a mixture of fishmeal and vegetable matter impregnated with a blend of water and glycerine until it has a density slightly less than that of water. The outer layer contains sufficient glycerine that the overall density of the pellet is greater than that of water. It may also contain fish attractants and colourants. When cast into a body of water 5, the pellet sinks towards the bed 6. As the glycerine diffuses out of the outer layer into the water, the overall density of the pellet drops until it is less than that of water, and the pellet rises towards the surface 4 of the water. This simulates natural prey of the fish, and a fisherman's baited hook cast into a stream 7 of rising pellets is more likely to be taken by the fish. |
