FIELD: biotechnology, organic chemistry, biochemistry. ^ SUBSTANCE: invention represents a novel method of preparing optically active 4-(indole-3-ylmethyl)-4-hydroxy-2-oxoglutaric acid (IHOG) used in preparing monatine, and a method for synthesis of optically active monatine. Also, invention relates to a novel aldolase used in these methods. 4-(Indole-3-ylmethyl)-4-hydroxy-2-oxoglutaric acid of high optical purity representing effective intermediate compound for synthesis of optically active monatine can be synthesized from indolpyruvic acid and pyruvic acid (or oxalacetic acid).
