PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately detect inferior delivery of liquid by performing data processing only at timing for originally detecting delivery of the liquid. SOLUTION: An apparatus 20 for detecting inferior delivery of the liquid emits an optical beam 34 from a light emitting element 30 such as a semiconductor laser and an LED in the direction orthogonal to the liquid delivering direction of a delivering liquid such as ink droplets delivered from a nozzle, receives the light emitted from the light emitting element by a light receiving element 40 such as a photo-diode, and detects the inferior delivery of the delivering liquid from the data of the light receiving signal received by the light receiving element. In the apparatus for detecting inferior delivery of the liquid like this, except a definite range before and after intersection of the delivering liquid delivered from the nozzle and the optical beam 34 emitted from the light emitting element, the data of the light receiving signal received by the light receiving element are masking-processed.
