PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simply and highly precisely detect occurrence of head slapping. SOLUTION: The head slap detection device detects the head slapping caused with a storage medium driving unit which reproduces and/or records data on a storage medium, the head slapping is detected by comparing the gain of a variable gain amplifier, amplifying output of data reproduced by the storage medium driving unit with the variable gain with a predetermined threshold to find whether the gain exceeds the predetermined threshold. When the head slapping is detected, information regarding the head slapping (for example, the number of times of head slapping, a generation time, and temperature at the time of the head slapping) is held. Further, when the output of data for servo control is amplified by the variable gain amplifier with the variable gain, the gain is compared with the predetermined threshold to find whether the gain exceed the predetermined threshold, thereby detecting the head slapping.
