Shaped elastomeric material is continuously manufactured by preparing a composition in which at least 50% of the total elastomeric content is a butadiene-styrene-divinylbenzene terpolymer, the composition including one or more fillers in a total amount of not less than 30 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of the total elastomeric content; extruding the composition; and subjecting the shaped material, on emerging from the extruder, to continuous vulcanization in hot air. Suitable additional elastomers for incorporating with the terpolymer include natural rubber, butadiene-styrene or butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymers, polybutadiene, polyisoprene and polychloroprene and may be used in their normal or "oil extended" forms. The fillers may be any of the usual rubber fillers of which zinc oxide, aluminium silicate, carbon black and kaolin are exemplified. The fillers are heat and/or vacuum treated, if necessary, to render them capable of absorbing the gases or vapours evolved during vulcanization. Conventional rubber additives such as vulcanizing agents, accelerators, diluents and anti-ageing agents may be included in the composition. |
