A method and apparatus for suspending and turning a tubular drill string comprises a top drive, a first gripping member capable of engaging an outside portion of the tubular string, a second gripping member adapted to be driven by the top drive, wherein the second gripping member comprises a body, one or more slips, and an actuator for engaging the slip(s) with an interior surface of the tubular string, and wherein the first gripping member is selectively moveable to couple and decouple from the second gripping member. |
