PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control method and a controller of a stepping motor wherein an operation of the motor is not affected by detecting a ripple current at performing the high-frequency switching of a duty ratio 50% through a PWM control system, so that a current average value may become zero, and it is not required to cause a constant current to flow through a motor winding by detecting a difference in inductance. SOLUTION: In the control method of the stepping motor, a plurality of switching elements S<SB>1</SB>to S<SB>4</SB>are operated, and the energizing order of the winding 10 of the stepping motor is controlled by an energizing signal generator 1, and an energizing current is controlled to become a predetermined value by the PWM constant current control method. In the control method, a ripple current is detected which is generated when a voltage with zero level current average value is applied to the motor at a high frequency by the PWM constant current control method, then a kind of the motor is discriminated from the difference in inductance, and a current value flowing through the motor is automatically set matching the kind of the motor discriminated from the ripple current.
