PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating agent which has X-ray-shielding capabilities in spite of containing no lead and is capable of forming a highly transparent X-ray-shielding coating film, to provide an X-ray-shielding coating film formed from the coating agent, and to provide a method for producing the coating agent. SOLUTION: What is provided is: a coating agent comprising (A) a product of hydrolysis/condensation of a metal alkoxide having a functional group containing an unpaired electron-containing element except an oxygen atom in the molecule and (B) bismuth, an X-ray-shielding coating film formed from the coating agent, and a method for producing the coating agent comprising (a) the step of preparing a solution containing a metal alkoxide having a functional group containing an unpaired electron-containing element except an oxygen atom and an organic solvent and (b) the step of adding a catalyst to the solution and hydrolyzing and condensing the metal alkoxide.
