Polynucleotides (I) derived from the marine diatom Fragilariopsis cylindrusand coding for proteins in response to cold and salt stress are new. Polynucleotides (I) derived from the marine diatom Fragilariopsis cylindrusand coding for proteins in response to cold and salt stress, with SEQ ID NO:1-3 (defined sequences of 948, 886 and 1280 nucleotides given in the specification), are new. Independent claims are also included for: (1) oligonucleotides that hybridize with (I); (2) polypeptides encoded by (I); (3) expression cassettes comprising (I) linked to regulatory sequences; (4) recombinant vectors comprising the expression cassettes; (5) prokaryotic or eukaryotic hosts transformed with the vectors.
