A method for searching for messages in a portable terminal is provided to minimize the frequency of key input in searching for messages by displaying the contents of a message, at which the cursor is placed, through a pop-up window and shifting message lists using page up/down keys. A control part in a portable terminal confirms whether message search mode is selected(201). If message search mode is selected, the control part displays a list of stored messages(203). In this case, the cursor is placed at a preset position. The control part displays the contents of a message where the cursor is placed at present(205). Then, if a page up key is inputted(207), the control part confirms whether the cursor is placed at the top of the displayed list(209). If not, the control part shifts the cursor to a message located at the top of the displayed list(211). If the cursor is placed at the top of the displayed list, the control part displays the previous message list to the presently displayed message list, maintaining the present location of the cursor(213). The control part displays the contents of a message where the cursor is located at present(223).
