LIGHT SOURCE UNIT FOR HEAT-ASSISTED MAGNETIC RECORDING, AND METHOD OF MANUFACTURING THIN-FILM MAGNETIC HEAD WITH THE UNIT

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a means for avoiding a decrease in total manufacturing yield of a thin-film magnetic head whose integrated surface and ABS are perpendicular to each other due to a defective rate of a light source and an error in installation position while the light source is installed at a distance from the ABS.

SOLUTION: The light source unit for heat-assisted magnetic recording is provided with: a unit substrate having an adhesion surface to be bonded to the surface of a slider opposite to the ABS; the light source provided on the unit substrate; a propagation layer provided on an element formation surface perpendicular to the adhesion surface of the unit substrate and including an optical path of light emitted by the light source to reach an end surface of the propagation layer itself on the side of the adhesion surface; a lens unit provided to the propagation layer to adjust propagation of the light emitted by the light source; and a mark unit for the unit provided on at least one of both flanks of the propagation layer which face each other along a track width and for alignment with the slider.
