<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of preventing the entanglement of a recording material with an intermediate transfer body with an inexpensive constitution. <P>SOLUTION: First, the apparatus comprises a margin detecting means for detecting the leading margin of the recording material and a printing ratio detecting means for detecting the printing ratio at the leading end of each color component image, Next, the apparatus comprises a stopping means for stopping the operation of the intermediate transfer body based on the corresponding relation between the leading margin and the printing ratio at the leading end. That is, in such a situation that a fixed relation is not satisfied between the leading margin and the printing ratio at the leading end, the intermediate transfer body is stopped.
