PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the data amount of spectral reflectance, and to form an image obtained by reproducing an object to be picked up faithfully. SOLUTION: This image forming apparatus calculates 31 spectral reflectances in a pixel unit as a wavelength interval 10nm and represents the spectral reflectances by a spectral reflectance estimation function by the linear coupling of six eigenvectors. Since eigenvectors are defined by using spectral reflectances of various colors included in the object to be picked up, even a comparatively small number of eigenvectors can represent a spectral reflectance estimation function having various characteristics with high accuracy. The spectral reflectance estimation function represented in this way shows a characteristic that almost coincides with the original spectral reflectance in wavelength regions 400 nm to 700 nm. Therefore, even if the data amount of the spectral reflectance is reduced down to about twenty percent, an image that faithfully reproduces the object to be picked up can be formed with hardly deteriorating accuracy.
