PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To set the optimal ignition timing of a spark ignition internal combustion engine of reflecting an operation condition and an operation state of an internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: This method for determining the optimal ignition timing, delays the ignition timing little by little from an initial value SA<SB>1</SB>(S10 and S12), and determines an average indicator characteristic curve and torqueτin its ignition timing advance angle by performing combustion simulation (S14), and determines whether or not knocking is caused by using an ignition timing predicting technique (S16 and S18), and sets the optimal ignition timing (S22) by the limit ignition timing of causing the knocking. Here, the ignition timing predicting technique (S16) starts the average indicator characteristic curve calculated by the combustion simulation, and predicts the existence of the occurrence of knocking on its ignition timing, by using a cycle variation mode, a self-ignition predicting model and a knock determining value variation model.
