METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR SECURITY SEQUENCE NUMBERING IN A WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM

A security sequence numbering method and apparatus in a wireless communications system are provided to use one sequence number in a first security function of a first protocol entity and a security function of a second protocol entity to decrease overhead and complexity. A security sequence numbering method(30) in a wireless communications system is composed of a step of using a first sequence number as a parameter of a first security function in a first protocol entity(302) and a step of using the first sequence number as a parameter of a second security function in a second protocol entity(304). The first and second security functions are different from each other. The first security function is for integrity protection and the second security function is for encryption.
