PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a controller for an automatic transmission, which suppresses variations in engine speed in an idling state caused by variations in drag torque of a wet clutch while also suppressing a change in driving force in creep start motion caused by the variations in the drag torque. SOLUTION: A transmission control unit 100 estimates or detects drag torque of clutches 8 and 9 which are frictional conveyance mechanisms to convey torque of an engine 7 to a drive shaft with the clutches 8 and 9 put into slip engagement. The control unit 100 outputs a command for adjusting the torque generated by the engine 7 base on the estimated or detected drag torque, or outputs a command for adjusting pressing load on friction surfaces of the clutches 8 and 9 so that the rotational speed of the engine 7 is kept substantially constant between the time when a vehicle is in a state what is called idling stoppage and the time when the rotational speed of input shafts 41 and 42 substantially accord with the rotational speed of the source of driving force.
