PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ink-jet recording apparatus which can maintain good discharge performance, does not cause image quality deterioration of recorded images, and is capable of executing a discharge recovery process at appropriate timing without reduction in throughput. SOLUTION: The duty of dots is detected for each area of a recorded image in each scan of a recording head. When the duty is detected, a coefficient selected in accordance with the duty for each area by referencing a table. Then, the dot count value counted in the area is multiplied by the selected coefficient, thereby obtaining a weighted dot count value; and the total thereof is obtained. Then, whether the thus-obtained corrected dot count value is larger than a predetermined threshold value or not is determined. When it is determined to be less than the threshold value in this determination, this process is terminated, and next scanning is performed without performing wiping.
