The engine (1) has a retarder brake for producing brake performance, and with a pivoted retarder rotor wheel mechanically coupled with a drive shaft of the engine. An exhaust gas brake (13) is formed similar to a compressor (3) and arranged in an exhaust gas system (6). The retarder rotor wheel lies in a flow path of the exhaust gas system. A turbocharger (2) is provided with the compressor in an intake system (4) and an exhaust-gas turbine (5) in the exhaust gas system.
