The availability of resource e.g. microphone and gas detector and the type of available resource are determined by programmable network nodes e.g. telephone and personal digital assistant (PDA). The nodes are associated with logical node names based on the determined type of the resource. The nodes are provided with instructions to perform a function, based on the logical node name. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) processor; (2) programmable network node; and (3) networked sensing system.
