The converter (1) has a pump impeller (10) drive connected with a drive motor of a motor vehicle and a turbine wheel (20) drive connected with an input shaft of a gear unit of the vehicle. A guide wheel (15) is supported at a stator shaft (18) in a rotatable direction by a free wheel (17), where the impeller, the turbine wheel and the guide wheel form a partial boundary (30) of an area (32), in which a hydraulic circuit (33) is formed. A section of the boundary is designed opposite to the remaining boundary such that torque transferred from the impeller on the wheel (20) is changeable.
