The bench (2) has a seat (4) and a divided hinged backrest (6) with a backrest segment (8) on a seat bench side (10) and another backrest segment (12) on the opposite seat bench side (14). A locking mechanism is attached to the backrest segment (12) for locking the backrest segment (12) in a normal position. An operating unit (16) is arranged on the opposite seat bench side of the backrest segment (12), and co-operates with the locking mechanism in such a manner that it unlocks the backrest segment (12) during operation.
