In a chain-stitch sewing-machine, verticallyhanging work is fed past the needle by two cooperating endless bands mounted for movement in a horizontal plane. The machine, which is designed to replace the normal cup-feed machine, is intended for sewing together the selvedge edges of pieces of material. Toothed rollers 3a, 4a, 5a are journalled in a triangle on a bracket 1 rigid with the machine frame 2, and carry a continuous belt 7 toothed on both sides. The apex roller 4a is positively driven. Toothed rollers 3b, 4b, 5b are journalled on a plate 11 and carry a toothed belt 8. The runs of the belts at the bases of the triangles co-operate to feed the work therebetween. Plate 11 is pivoted on the axis of the apex roller 4b to a bracket 13 which is slidably mounted in frame 2 and is biased by spring 15 to urge plate 11 towards bracket 1. A spring 14, interposed between bracket 13 and plate 11, tends to bias the latter counterclockwise, whereby, when bracket 13 is actuated to move plate 11 away from bracket 1, the rollers 5a, 5b remain closed together, while a gap opens between the rollers 3a, 3b to facilitate the introduction of the work therebetween. The work passes between plates 9 and 16 rigid with bracket 1 and plate 11, and formed with needle-passing passages 10 and 17, respectively. The needle 20 does not fully withdraw from passage 10. The thread chain formed between successive pieces of work is gripped between, and drawn through the machine, by co-operating serrated flanges on the rollers 5a, 5b. |
