In a card-arresting device for use in time-recording apparatus, the position of punchings to be applied to a card 20 is determined by a deformation of the card which deformation is used to actuate a testing device 2 when the card is inserted in the apparatus, and testing device 2 is arranged to be so actuated by a deformation of the card that it is moved together with the card and substantially parallel thereto and by this movement causes the operation of a locking arrangement which acts upon the card. Testing device 2, having a test member 1 consisting of a number of thin resilient ribs or of a leaf-spring, is pivotally mounted at 3 on a locking lever 4 which is mounted on a pivot 5 fixed to a supporting frame (not shown). A spring 8 urges member 1 against card 20, and lever 4 is normally kept out of engagement with card 20 by the force exerted by contact-spring 15 through a plunger 16 and a lever 17 pivoted to the supporting frame. When card 20 is inserted and a hole in or other deformation of the card is engaged by the free end of member 1, device 2 is moved downwardly with the card, thereby rotating lever 4 clockwise so that a locking tooth 18 on lever 4 engages the card, which is thus squeezed tightly between tooth 18 and a fixed member 22. The movement of lever 4 moves spring 15 into contact with spring 14, thereby closing a circuit to bring about punching of the card. |
