A space charge wave amplifier or oscillator tube comprises means for generating two electron beams in opposite directions, the paths of the electron beams converging and diverging periodically relatively to each other and the two beams interact in such a manner that a spatial harmonic component of a slow or fast space charge wave associated with one of the electron beams is coupled to a wave component (fundamental or spatial harmonic) of a fast or slow space charge wave associated with the other electron beam and travelling in the same direction as the first mentioned wave component. Thus the first space charge wave is a forward or backward wave and the second a backward or forward wave. The electron beams interact at convergent or divergent parts of their paths and energy can be extracted from either beam. The two beams may be coupled through the spaces between rods 11, Fig. 3, in a slalom electrostatic field, or by apertures in grid 17, Fig. 4, the slalom field being supplemented by a magnetic field into the plane of the paper to make the two electron beams take cycloidal paths. By reversing the direction of the magnetic field the interaction between the beams can be made to take place at the looped parts instead of at the broad curved parts of the electron paths. One of the plates 16 of Fig. 5 (not shown) can be omitted, the adjacent electron beam taking a straight path. The backward wave must be a spatial harmonic while the forward wave can be a fundamental or a spatial harmonic, examples and theory being given, e.g. first, second or third backward space harmonics in one beam and fundamental in first, second or third space harmonics in the other beam. Output can be taken from a blystron catcher resonator. |
