933,577. Discharge apparatus. GENERAL ELECTRODYNAMICS CORPORATION. Jan. 16, 1961 [March 25, 1960], No. 1728/61. Class 39 (1). [Also in Group XIII] A method of thermosetting printed indicia on paper comprises placing the paper 30 between a pair of spaced apart electrodes 18, 20, coated with dielectric material 22, 24, and applying a potential difference between the electrodes sufficient to create a corona discharge in the space between the electrodes. The potential difference is sufficient to ionize the dielectric fluid, e.g. carbon dioxide, nitrogen, argon, transformer oil, between the electrodes but is insufficient to exceed the breakdown potential of the dielectric coating, and preferably a frequency between 100 kc/s. and 1 Mc/s. is used. The paper may be continuously passed between the electrodes one of which may take the form of a rotatable drum. The dielectric coating is preferably either a ceramic, e.g. steatite or borosilicate glass. |
