An apparatus and a method for MAC(Media Access Control) layer data communication in a broadband wireless communication system are provided to reduce overhead, caused by PDU(Protocol Data Unit) generation and decomposition, and an unnecessary CRC(Cyclic Redundancy Check) calculation amount by controlling a CRC length according to a payload length(or MAC PDU). A MAC encoder(300) consists of a payload generator(300), a CRC(Cyclic Redundancy Check) generator(3030), and a header generator(302). The payload generator(301) generates a payload of a PDU(Protocol Data Unit). The CRC generator(303) selects an error check code length according to a length of the generated payload, generates an error check code according to the selected length and adds the generated error check code to the payload. A header generator(302) generates a header for the generated payload and adds the generated header to the front of the payload.
