A video display apparatus for converting a data format according to condition of an external video device and a control method thereof are provided to convert and output the size, resolution, and format of video data according to the condition of the external video device without a separate device, thereby simplifying configuration and reducing cost. A data transceiving unit(320) receives data transmission request and device information from an external video device and transmits converted data. A control unit(260) analyzes corresponding device information received from the data transceiving unit, selects at least one data to convert and transmit in data prestored in a storage unit(270), and converts the format of the selected data into a support format corresponding to information about the analyzed external video device.
