An image forming apparatus and a method for controlling the operation thereof are provided to reduce the time required for cleaning the print heads by transferring a blade in a paper convey direction to simultaneously clean a plurality of print heads arranged in an array type. An image forming apparatus comprises an ink cartridge(100) having a plurality of print heads(150) aligned widthwise, a wiping unit and a controller. The print heads are arranged in a direction crossing the conveying direction of a printing medium. The wiping unit moves in the conveying direction of the printing medium to wipe a nozzle surface(150a) of the print head. The controller individually drives the print head, which is wiped by the wiping unit, such that the print head ejects a predetermined amount of ink.
