A method of forming a package comprising a carton having a lining e.g. of thermoplastics material includes the steps of attaching the lining to the carton by point adhesion, filling the lining with material to be packed, wholly or mainly breaking the adhesion between the lining and the carton, evacuating and closing the package in a vacuum chamber. A filled package 30, with the lining and carton joined as described above, is gripped by jaws 31, 32, 33 on a turret 13 which convey it in an annular path to an evacuating chamber 12 on a turret 10. Carton flaps 35, 36 are folded back by hooks 37, 38 to expose the top 39 of the lining, which is sealed apart from an air escape passage. A pair of knives 40, 41 mounted for vertical movement relative to a head 44, which moves with the package, are lowered by means of bell crank lever 46, 48 and a follower 49 in a cam track 50. The knives pass between the lining and the carton to break the adhesive. A pair of spring loaded jaws, operated by cam means, grips the top 39 to hold it while the adhesive is broken, Fig. 3 (not shown). Specification 875,658 is referred to.</p> |
