A vehicle control system is provided to make more room for allowing passengers to board the vehicle more easily by receiving request signals from portable units carried by passengers, and moving the seats according to the request signals received by vehicle side units. A vehicle control system has sensor units(6a1~6d1,6a2~6d2) for detecting a number of passengers and positions of the passengers approaching a vehicle to board the vehicle, and position changing units(7,8) for changing the position of at least one seat whereto at least one passenger is expected to be seated so as to increase the space to make more room for the boarding passengers. The position changing units, based on the detection by the sensor units, move a seat on a first row of seats closer to a front side of the vehicle when at least one passenger is determined to be boarding the vehicle through a first row door corresponding to the first row of seats. When at least one passenger is determined to be seated on a seat on a third row of seats, a seat on a second row of seats is moved sideways away from a door the passengers are expected to enter the vehicle. The sensor units include plural portable units(1) carried by plural occupants, and vehicle side units installed inside the vehicle. The vehicle side units have plural transmitters(2a~2e), plural receivers(3), and verification units. The transmitters are installed on each of the doors. The transmitters create communication regions around the doors, and receive request signals from the portable units. The receivers receive request signals from the plural portable devices, and send reply signals. The verification units determine whether predetermined relationship exist between received ID codes of the request signals from the portable units and pre-registered ID codes of the portable units. The portable units, when receiving the reply signals from the receivers of the vehicle side unit, transmit respond signals containing ID unique to each of the portable units. The sensor units, when the request signals from the portable units are verified by the verification units, detect at least one passenger and the position of the passenger based on the receivers which have received the request signals from the portable units.
