It is intended to provide a culture monitoring system which makes it possible to conduct the cultivation of a culture other than the culture to be monitored and to appropriately monitor the other culture under a microscope while continuing the cultivation of the culture. This culture monitoring system (S) has a culture unit (2) for constructing the environment suitable for culturing cells in a culture chamber (13) and an imaging device (3) for photographing a microscopic image of a cell, wherein the imaging device (3) is provided with a light source (47) located in the culture chamber (13) and a table (37) located in the culture chamber (13) for supporting the culture to be photographed and shelves (7) for holding the cells are also provided in the space other than those for the light source (47) and the table (37) in the culture chamber (13).
