The device (10) has a load bar (12) that is fixed to a tarpaulin (18). The bar is guided in translation by a rail (14), at an end (121) of the bar, such that the bar is only supported by the end (121). The bar is transversal to the rail and fixed to a tarpaulin (18) for permitting the displacement of the tarpaulin along the rail. A carriage guides the bar along the rail. The carriage comprises rollers that are engaged with the rail. The bar is connected to the carriage. A manual drive mechanism drives the bar in movement and is formed of a cord that is pulled by a user.
